What is everyone's ideal retro setup? Do any of you ever think to have a little corner where you have your retro games and consoles to sit. I have thought to dig out an old CRT TV and set up accordingly

10 years ago I lived in an attic room with a tiny cupboard in the corner, with a beanbag, TV and a stack of Xbox 360 games inside. It would be nice to have something reminiscent of that, and it's weird to think 360 is becoming 'retro' now.

What retro games are the people playing?

I'm playing DQ3 for the SNES because I like having my gal pals. I'm not sure about the remake, visually its very pleasing but it seems like you can autoplay the entire game. And I'm not paying that much money for it fuck you Squeenix

I should finish Chrono Trigger.

Early today I downloaded Septerra Core. I found that game for the first time in a CD full of demos I found as a kid in the trash. The CD was so busted that out of all the games it had Septerra was the only one that properly worked.

Cool to see old games getting new ports to Linux

The GOG version is not actually a linux port, it's just an old wine wrapper that I never manage to make it work. It's better to run the win version under proton with this patch: https://www.zombs-lair.com/post/definitive-edition-patcher-septerra-core

Ah well, still cool

I could seldomly get wine to play nice with old games, fond memories 10 years ago of being up into the early morning out of sheer frustration. Linux was like signing a contract 'I will not game (except nethack)'

Proton is making a pretty big difference, I have some friends that have gotten into Linux more recently and found most of their games work, some even run better. Personally I still keep Windows on a dual boot though.

For a while I have been intending to upgrade or get a new PC. It is quite a lot of things to handle and get comfortable with but my main issue is honestly how to even budget in 2025 and to acquire components that arent high end (whilst ignoring the techbros that insist and only list the high end when doing research)

So how does anyone else acquire their components?
factory sealed or used?
old or new?
Do you look into the next 5 years?
Do you buy power that you just don't need?

The last thing I bought is the laptop I'm using right now. I got it refurbished and it's working perfectly. I think, unless you are really into gaming, any computer nowadays is good enough pretty much for everything

I think there's only a need to buy high-end hardware if you have high-end purposes. Middle of the range is perfectly sufficient for most people.

It used to be the case your hardware would be obsolete within a few years, these days it seems to improve far more slowly. RIP Murphy's Law. I guess that's to do with the minimum size of circuitry, quantum mechanics stuff.

If I can take care of it, I'm sure my navi will be good for a long time.

>old or new?

Always second-hand personally, as long as there's nothing visibly wrong with it. Paying the new hardware premium doesn't make much difference, usually.

Yeah pretty much, a few years ago I was very comfortable on a Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of DDR2 RAM. What I have now feels like more than I need.

Nekospace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate felines, in every nation, by kitties being taught cute concepts... A graphic representation of data abstracted from the jungles of every cat cafe in the felidae system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the feline mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like lazer pointer lights, receding...

I've played the PC98 games much more than the Windows games in the series, I think Mystic Square might be my favourite

And that could just be because I like the PC98 graphics

This is the designated board to complain that the imageboard doesn't work, is full of bugs, that I am a bad admin, etc.

If you have any questions or critique that doesn't deserve its own thread, feel free to post here.
